Last Updated on August 26, 2020 by Tim

These days it takes a lot more than a good pot and a bit of soil to do some gardening. Hobbyist gardeners like to make things from scratch, whether it be garden fences, greenhouses or garden furniture you can do it yourself with relative ease these days.

With all the tutorials and guides available online, gardening is actually the easy part. The challenge comes when you look at your tool kit and realize you have no idea what to do with any of its content, or if it is even appropriate for gardening.

Have no fear, we are here to help you. We have put together a list of gardening must-haves so that you are never left without the right equipment in the middle of a fun gardening project.

Table of Contents

    • 2. Hand Fork and Hand Trowel
    • 3. Rake
    • 4. Secateurs
    • 5. Sheers

    • 2. Hammer and Nails

    • 4. Saw
    • 5. Sander

Must-Have Tools For Planting

You will obviously need slightly different tools for planting and maintaining plants and flowers than you would for construction fences and other garden fixtures. We suggest keeping tools in two separate toolboxes so that they stay in the right category.

1. Gloves

Gloves protect you from stinging nettles, thornes, and many other unpleasant surprises that lurk in the weeds and soil.

2. Hand Fork and Hand Trowel

A hand trowel will help you plant new flowers and greenery, it will also help you uproot stubborn weeds with ease. Hand forks are the same size as a trowel, but they are mostly used for turning and mixing stubborn soil.

3. Rake

A rake won’t fit in your toolbox, but it is an essential gardening tool that you will use all year round. Use it for churning and mixing soil, as well as for cleaning the garden and moving dead leaves.

4. Secateurs

These are small clippers that are great for removing damaged small branches from your plants.

5. Sheers

Sheers cut lots of sticks and leaves at once, usually used to shape and maintain bushes.

Must-Have Tools For construction and Maintenance

Now for the serious tools, these will help you do any maintenance work on your garden as well as creating new garden fixtures and accessories.

1.Jointer

A wood jointer is a tool that flattens and re-shapes twisted or distorted wood. You will need this to fix any old wooden fence pieces that have gotten damaged over time, or to shape new planks of wood that are not exactly as you want them to be.

A wood jointer must be strong and durable, so it is not always an easy item to buy.  Use this review to help you choose the right jointer for your toolbox.

2. Hammer and Nails

Is it even a toolbox if you don’t have a hammer and some nails?

3. Drill

A drill is a must-have when you are making garden constructions in order to secure things in place strongly and safely.

4. Saw

Use whichever saw you are most comfortable with, just make sure you have one to gut down wood to the perfect size.

5. Sander

Preferably an electric sander, this will give you smooth and splinter-free finishes on your finished items.
